# America to Refill Strategic Petroleum Reserve With Venezuelan Oil After Years Spent Explaining Venezuela Was the Problem

**WASHINGTON** — The United States announced plans to rebuild its depleted Strategic Petroleum Reserve using Venezuelan crude, completing a years-long policy journey from sanctioning Venezuela’s oil industry to deciding Venezuela’s oil would be extremely useful.

Officials said the move reflects changing geopolitical realities and should not be interpreted as evidence that previous geopolitical realities were inconveniently temporary.

For years, Washington treated Venezuelan oil as a strategic liability tied to an authoritarian government, corruption and sanctions violations.

It is now being considered a strategic asset tied to energy security, lower prices and the fact that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is sitting near a 44-year low.

“The important thing is that we remain consistent in defending American interests,” one administration official said. “Those interests occasionally require doing the opposite thing.”

The White House stressed that purchasing Venezuelan crude does not represent a reversal so much as an evolution in which unacceptable oil becomes acceptable after enough other oil becomes expensive.

Energy analysts noted that the arrangement could help refill emergency reserves while reducing pressure on domestic fuel prices.

Critics asked whether relying on Venezuelan supply undermines years of U.S. sanctions policy.

Officials responded that sanctions remain an essential tool for isolating regimes until their commodities become strategically necessary.

At press time, Venezuela remained a threat to U.S. energy security and a promising source of U.S. energy security.
