**SAN FRANCISCO** — Anthropic is reportedly arranging a credit facility worth more than $10 billion, giving the rapidly growing AI company access to the enormous amount of money required to eventually become the sort of company banks feel comfortable lending $10 billion to.

The financing has attracted intense competition among Wall Street banks, several of which hope that lending Anthropic billions today will improve their chances of earning millions later by helping take the company public.

Bankers described the arrangement as an elegant example of the financial ecosystem working exactly as intended.

“We lend them $10 billion,” said one person involved in the discussions. “They spend it growing. Then we help convince public investors that all the spending created tremendous value. Then those investors give Anthropic more money, allowing Anthropic to repay us.”

Asked what happens if the spending does not create tremendous value, the banker clarified that this was why public investors were included in the previous sentence.

Anthropic is expected to use vast amounts of capital expanding computing capacity, developing increasingly powerful models, and paying for the infrastructure necessary to someday make artificial intelligence extraordinarily inexpensive.

Banks, meanwhile, are competing aggressively for a place in the lending syndicate despite the risks, because participation could position them for lucrative IPO underwriting work.

The arrangement effectively allows Wall Street to finance the customer it hopes will later hire Wall Street to sell the customer to Wall Street’s other customers.

Industry observers praised the efficiency.

“In the old days, companies became profitable and then banks wanted their business,” said one analyst. “AI has removed the unnecessary waiting period.”
