INTERNET - Bitcoin users opened a mature and technically rigorous discussion Wednesday about the long-term threat quantum computing could pose to cryptographic keys, quickly reaching the important preliminary conclusion that everyone advocating a different solution is probably working for the government.

The debate follows growing research into whether sufficiently powerful quantum computers could one day break signatures protecting older or exposed Bitcoin addresses. Estimates cited in recent research suggest a substantial share of the circulating supply could eventually be vulnerable under such a scenario.

Within minutes, one group proposed a migration to quantum-resistant signatures. A second group called the proposal an attack on immutability. A third demanded proof that quantum mechanics itself was not a World Economic Forum psyop.

"There is absolutely a path forward," said a protocol researcher. "Step one is to agree the problem exists. Step two is to accuse anyone who agrees too enthusiastically of creating the problem. Step three is a seven-year mailing-list thread."

Bitcoin veterans said the network has successfully navigated difficult upgrades before and could do so again, provided users have enough warning to move vulnerable coins and developers have enough time to design, test and deploy new cryptographic protections.

The largest unresolved question concerns coins that cannot or will not move, including ancient wallets whose owners may have lost their keys, died, forgotten about them, or become sufficiently wealthy that opening a laptop now feels vulgar.

Experts emphasized that practical quantum attacks on Bitcoin are not imminent today. The community therefore agreed there is still plenty of time to procrastinate until the threat becomes an emergency, at which point everyone can complain the upgrade was rushed.
