**BUSINESS** — Companies are increasingly using artificial intelligence to bring technology work in-house, reduce consulting bills and generally discover that paying thousands of people to make PowerPoints about software may not be a law of nature.

Large clients including Bayer and Bristol Myers Squibb are pushing work away from outside advisers as AI makes coding, systems integration and other traditional consulting work easier to perform internally. Just one-third of clients surveyed said they were completely satisfied with externally led IT projects.

Consultants responded swiftly by identifying the collapse of consulting demand as a promising new consulting opportunity.

“This is fundamentally an AI-transformation problem,” said Graham Wexler, managing partner at Stratagem Partners. “Companies will need experienced advisers to help determine how many experienced advisers they no longer need.”

The industry is already repositioning around AI implementation, cybersecurity and more specialized work, while global spending on technology consulting is still expected to reach roughly $420 billion this year.

Executives stressed that consultants remain essential for complicated transformations, particularly when companies lack the expertise necessary to deploy AI systems capable of reducing their dependence on consultants.

Wexler said his firm recently helped one Fortune 500 client automate enough internal work to eliminate 40 outside consulting positions.

“We’re extremely proud,” he said. “Fortunately, the implementation required 63 consultants.”
