After years of bitter polarization, Democrats and Republicans have finally found common ground: both agree the country they have been jointly governing is becoming increasingly expensive and miserable.

The University of Michigan’s latest consumer-sentiment reading deteriorated across party lines, with Democratic and Republican respondents alike reporting growing concern about inflation, gasoline prices and the broader economy.

Washington celebrated the development as a major bipartisan breakthrough.

“For too long, Americans have focused on what divides us,” said one congressional aide. “Today, we can finally unite around something both parties helped create.”

One-year inflation expectations also jumped to 4.6%, giving voters an increasingly rare shared belief: whatever costs too much now will probably cost more later.

Party leaders immediately claimed the finding as evidence their opponents had failed, while quietly agreeing not to discuss the several trillion dollars of bipartisan spending, deficits, subsidies, emergency programs and industrial policies accumulated along the way.

Analysts said the breakthrough proves American institutions are still capable of producing consensus, provided they first produce sufficiently widespread economic discomfort.

Washington is now exploring whether similar unity can be achieved on housing, healthcare and insurance by continuing to make all three less affordable.

For one shining moment, America is united again.

It just took both parties working together.
