**WASHINGTON** — Federal Reserve officials remain confident inflation will eventually return to 2% once tariffs, wars, energy shocks, AI infrastructure spending, supply disruptions, fiscal deficits, housing costs, and several other things currently causing inflation have politely concluded.

Policymakers stressed that many of today’s price pressures are temporary, using the central-banking definition of temporary meaning **unlikely to continue forever**.

“Tariffs should eventually work through the system,” one Fed official explained. “Energy shocks should fade. AI investment should become productive. Supply chains should normalize. Geopolitical tensions should ease. And at some point we assume everyone will stop needing housing.”

Under the Fed’s baseline forecast, inflation gradually returns to target as current disturbances dissipate and no comparably inconvenient disturbances replace them.

The forecast assumes:

- No new trade wars.
- No new actual wars.
- Stable oil markets.
- Moderating government deficits.
- AI companies eventually finish building things.
- Consumers stop noticing grocery prices.
- The global economy experiences approximately six consecutive quarters of normal.

Economists described the assumptions as reasonable because models require assumptions.

Fed officials also emphasized that the economy remains fundamentally resilient despite being repeatedly struck by unusual one-time events that now appear to arrive roughly every three weeks.

The central bank remains prepared to adjust policy if inflation proves more persistent than expected.

Officials said they are especially monitoring the possibility that the “temporary factors” may be replaced by new temporary factors, creating what economists technically refer to as **the future**.
