Governments around the world are racing to build the supposedly weightless digital economy by pouring concrete for data centers, expanding electrical grids and adding enough power generation to operate small countries.

South Korea recently estimated that AI-related growth could require an additional 25 to 30 gigawatts of power, roughly equivalent to the output of 20 nuclear reactors, prompting officials to consider expanding nuclear generation so software can continue becoming less tangible.

The revelation has forced policymakers to update their understanding of “the cloud,” previously believed to be an ethereal layer of innovation floating somewhere above the economy.

It is instead warehouses.

Huge warehouses.

Full of chips.

Attached to substations.

Attached to power plants.

“AI is fundamentally weightless,” explained one technology minister while approving several thousand tons of concrete, steel, copper, transformers and backup generators.

Officials remain enthusiastic about transitioning from the dirty industrial economy of factories and smokestacks to the clean digital economy of data centers, transmission lines and nuclear reactors.

Industry leaders stressed that none of this undermines AI’s efficiency.

A traditional office worker requires food, housing and approximately one laptop.

An AI model requires several billion dollars of chips, its own electrical grid and a small lake.

Fortunately, it works from home.
