LONDON — HSBC plans to eliminate up to 70% of its UK financial-adviser positions after discovering that artificial intelligence is also capable of saying the word “diversify,” potentially ending centuries of human competitive advantage in wealth management.

The bank is also cutting roughly half of certain management and specialist roles as it expands AI across its wealth business, allowing affluent clients to receive personalized reminders to “think long term,” “avoid timing the market,” and “consider their risk tolerance” at unprecedented computational speed.

“This is an extraordinary breakthrough,” said one wealth-management executive. “Until recently, only a highly trained professional could look at seven figures of investable assets and conclude that the client should own several different things.”

The technology has reportedly progressed to the point where it can also generate phrases including “stay the course,” “rebalance periodically,” and the extremely advanced “past performance is not indicative of future results,” capabilities previously thought to require a human being wearing an expensive watch.

HSBC had announced ambitions just two years ago to dramatically expand its UK wealth business and roughly double assets under management by the end of the decade.

Management has now apparently identified a more scalable strategy: manage twice as much wealth with substantially fewer people explaining diversification to it.

Industry analysts said human advisers will remain essential for the most sophisticated functions of modern wealth management, including reassuring clients during market crashes, recommending whatever private-credit product the bank is currently distributing, and gently explaining that paying someone 1% annually to say “don’t panic” is itself an important form of diversification.

AI is expected to learn that last part shortly.
