With Alphabet’s roughly $900 million early investment in SpaceX reportedly growing into something on the order of $94 billion, financial advisers are reminding ordinary Americans that building generational wealth is actually quite straightforward.

You just need to start early.

Preferably in 2015.

And preferably with $900 million.

The strategy, known as **“long-term investing,”** involves identifying one of the most consequential private companies in human history before nearly everyone else, obtaining a massive ownership stake at a tiny fraction of its eventual valuation, and then patiently doing nothing while it becomes worth approximately the annual economic output of Luxembourg.

The good news is that anyone can follow the same basic principles.

First, build an emergency fund covering three to six months of expenses.

Second, pay down high-interest debt.

Third, contribute regularly to a diversified retirement account.

Fourth, become Google.

From there, simply locate the next Elon Musk before he launches the dominant commercial rocket company on Earth and place nine hundred million dollars beside him.

Experts caution against trying to time the market. The important thing is **time in the market**, especially when the market is a private financing round inaccessible to you.

For investors who missed SpaceX in 2015, advisers recommend remaining disciplined and avoiding FOMO.

“There will always be another opportunity,” one planner explained. “Perhaps OpenAI in 2018, Bitcoin in 2011, or beachfront Manhattan in 1626.”

The key is consistency.
