PITTSBURGH - The artificial intelligence boom delivered its clearest real-world productivity breakthrough yet this week as power capacity prices in the PJM grid were reported to have increased 1,038% from 2024 levels, allowing ordinary factories to produce exactly the same goods with dramatically more expensive electricity.

Industrial firms across the Rust Belt said they were thrilled to finally experience the transformative potential of AI firsthand, primarily in the upper-right corner of their utility bills.

"For months we kept hearing that AI would revolutionize manufacturing," said the owner of a brick plant. "I assumed it would optimize the kiln or reduce waste. It turns out the revolution is that the kiln now competes for power with a warehouse generating 40 billion slightly different versions of a meeting summary."

Data centers have expanded rapidly across the region, placing new pressure on an electrical grid also serving steel mills, chemical plants and other legacy businesses that failed to build a compelling investor narrative around needing the output of a nuclear reactor to answer emails.

Economists said the development demonstrates the extraordinary efficiency of modern capital markets: technology companies can raise hundreds of billions of dollars to construct data centers, utilities can raise prices to serve them, manufacturers can pass some of those costs to consumers, and consumers can then ask an AI chatbot why everything is more expensive.

Local factories are reportedly adapting. One brick company has begun describing each pallet as "physical inference infrastructure" and is seeking a Series C valuation of $11 billion.

At press time, the plant was training a foundation model to determine whether a brick remains a brick after the monthly capacity charge rises another 90%.
