REDWOOD CITY, CA — SoftBank-backed SB Energy filed for a U.S. IPO that could value the company above $50 billion, introducing investors to a powerful new valuation metric known as **Total Addressable Future**, or TAF.

Unlike traditional measures such as revenue, earnings or operational assets, TAF calculates how valuable a company might become once most of the things it plans to build actually exist.

SB Energy currently has no operational data centers, generated $138.7 million in first-half revenue from its legacy energy business and posted a $3.21 billion loss.

It also has approximately $439 billion of contracted future revenue and project backlog.

“Revenue tells you what a company is doing now,” said technology analyst Michael Reeves. “Total Addressable Future tells you what management would prefer you focus on.”

The company has roughly 8.8 gigawatts of contracted data-center capacity and plans massive AI infrastructure projects for customers including OpenAI and SoftBank.

Wall Street analysts praised TAF as a significant improvement over the outdated Total Addressable Market, which merely estimates how large a market could theoretically become.

TAF goes further by allowing investors to assign value to decades of anticipated business before the buildings containing that business are finished.

Bankers said the metric could soon spread across the AI sector.

“Why wait for the future,” Reeves added, “when you can capitalize it today?”
