**HONG KONG** — Shein expanded its signature fast-fashion business model into financial markets Tuesday, introducing investors to the excitement of buying something brand new and watching it get marked down almost immediately.

Shares of the online retailer fell 8% on their first day of Hong Kong trading, after dropping as much as 10%, following a $1.7 billion IPO that valued Shein at roughly $26.5 billion.

The debut represents a natural extension of Shein’s core expertise: offering products at prices substantially lower than anyone previously thought possible.

The company was valued at nearly $100 billion in 2022, meaning investors had already received roughly 73% off before the stock exchange even opened.

“Customers have always loved discovering that something which looked expensive yesterday can suddenly be purchased for almost nothing,” said one retail analyst. “Management saw no reason shareholders should be excluded from that experience.”

Shein’s valuation has been battered by slowing growth, tariff changes, regulatory scrutiny and the elimination of duty-free treatment for many small packages entering major Western markets. The company reported a $99 million first-quarter loss this year after posting a $395 million profit during the same period a year earlier.

Investors nevertheless praised Shein for remaining faithful to its brand during the listing process.

While most companies spend their IPO trying to convince the public their shares will become more valuable over time, Shein managed to reproduce the authentic experience of scrolling past an item that was $48.56 this morning and discovering it for $43.72 before lunch.

Analysts said the company could regain investor confidence by applying several other proven elements of the Shein model, including flash sales, free shipping, limited-time coupons and a pop-up informing shareholders they are only HK$312 away from qualifying for another share they did not intend to buy.

At press time, Shein reminded investors not to become overly attached to the stock, as an almost identical one would probably be available tomorrow for less.
