BERLIN — Tesla has agreed to rename its “Full Self-Driving” technology to “Tesla Assisted Driving” across its European websites after regulators made the extraordinary discovery that words have meanings.

European authorities objected to the name because the system does not, in fact, fully drive itself. It requires a human driver to remain attentive, supervise the vehicle, and assume control when necessary—responsibilities traditionally associated with a less revolutionary technology known as driving.

Following extensive regulatory discussions, Tesla agreed to the controversial compromise of describing its product accurately.

Fortunately, American consumers remain protected from this outbreak of linguistic accountability.

In the United States, Tesla continues marketing the technology as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised),” a masterpiece of corporate semantics in which the words outside the parentheses make an extraordinary promise and the word inside them quietly takes it back.

“The beauty of parentheses is that they allow two mutually exclusive statements to coexist without technically occupying the same sentence,” explained an automotive marketing consultant. “It’s fully self-driving. Except for the driving you still have to do.”

Industry observers praised the distinction, noting that similar innovations could soon include “Guaranteed Investment Returns (Not Guaranteed),” “Unlimited Data (Limited),” and “Zero-Emission Vehicles (Emissions Sold Separately).”

Tesla's European rebranding is part of its effort to secure broader regulatory approval for the software, demonstrating that the company can accommodate government demands without actually changing what the technology does.

American regulators, meanwhile, continue navigating the considerably more sophisticated question of whether adding a disclaimer to an objectively misleading claim makes it less misleading—or simply more profitable.

For now, Tesla's vehicles remain capable of driving themselves, provided someone else is driving them.
