WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States will not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, establishing a historic new principle of American foreign policy: existential national security threats should be handled at a time that is more convenient politically.

Trump cited “productive discussions” with Tehran, though officials acknowledged the real diplomatic breakthrough appeared to be the discovery that bombing another country while Americans are complaining about gasoline prices might not be a winning electoral strategy.

“National security remains our absolute highest priority,” explained a senior administration official. “Obviously, excluding the House and Senate.”

The announcement comes as the six-month-old conflict has driven up energy prices, damaged Trump's approval ratings, and threatened Republican control of Congress. These developments have apparently persuaded the administration that Iran's nuclear ambitions, previously an urgent threat requiring military intervention, can safely wait another 26 days.

White House officials emphasized that the decision was not politically motivated, noting that November 3 was selected based on highly classified intelligence concerning the exact date Americans stop being useful as voters.

The Pentagon has reportedly updated its threat assessment system to distinguish between imminent threats, serious threats, and serious threats that would really be better dealt with after Wisconsin votes.

Administration officials also praised the strategic flexibility of allowing Americans to cast ballots without the distraction of another potentially escalating Middle Eastern war, particularly one whose economic consequences they might mistakenly associate with the administration currently conducting it.

Trump has meanwhile suggested oil prices will fall after the election, offering voters the reassuring prospect that the government has identified a solution to their financial suffering but would prefer not to implement it until they have finished voting.

The White House maintains that the timing is purely coincidental and reflects ongoing diplomatic progress.

Iran has not announced whether its nuclear program, military objectives, or foreign policy ambitions will similarly observe the American electoral calendar, leaving Washington to confront the troubling possibility that other countries may not fully appreciate how important Republican congressional majorities are to international peace.
