SAN FRANCISCO — AI chip startup Etched has reached a valuation of roughly $21 billion, more than doubling in less than a month after surviving what venture capitalists described as an exhausting three-week period of continued existence.
The company had reportedly been valued near $10 billion only weeks earlier, before investors received several additional Mondays to reflect on artificial intelligence.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” said one venture capitalist. “Twenty-one days ago, we believed this company was worth $10 billion. Since then, absolutely crucial developments have occurred, including Tuesday, Wednesday, and another Tuesday.”
Silicon Valley analysts said the rapid increase reflects strong demand for AI infrastructure, investor enthusiasm for alternatives to Nvidia, and several important updates to the Excel cell labeled “AI Multiple.”
The process reportedly involved extensive due diligence.
Investors examined Etched’s technology, market opportunity, competitive positioning, revenue potential, and whether $21 billion would still look embarrassingly small if someone valued it at $40 billion next month.
“Valuations are forward-looking,” explained one investor. “And the further forward you look, the less relevant $10 billion becomes.”
The milestone underscores the extraordinary speed of modern AI value creation, in which companies can generate billions of dollars in shareholder wealth without wasting valuable time on outdated intermediate steps like generating billions of dollars.
Etched is now expected to focus on its next major strategic objective: making it through September.
