SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The artificial intelligence industry reached a historic milestone Monday after Nvidia entered talks to help guarantee roughly $250 billion in financing for an enormous OpenAI data-center project, bringing humanity significantly closer to a machine capable of autonomously financing the purchase of more Nvidia chips.
The proposed arrangement, reported by the Wall Street Journal and summarized by Reuters, would support infrastructure needed for OpenAI's expanding compute ambitions. Investors said the structure demonstrates that the AI ecosystem is no longer constrained by the primitive requirement that customers first possess money before buying things.
"This is Artificial General Financing," said a technology banker. "Nvidia helps make the chips, OpenAI needs the chips, lenders finance the buildings that hold the chips, Nvidia helps guarantee the financing, and everyone books growth. If the cash circulates quickly enough, it technically becomes intelligence."
Wall Street has spent years debating when AI will generate enough productivity to justify unprecedented infrastructure spending. The new approach removes that uncertainty by using unprecedented infrastructure spending to justify more unprecedented infrastructure spending.
Analysts emphasized that financing guarantees are not the same thing as simply handing a customer $250 billion. They are a more advanced financial instrument in which somebody else hands the customer $250 billion after being reassured that Nvidia is standing nearby.
The arrangement is expected to accelerate construction of data centers capable of training increasingly powerful models to answer the question "Where will the money come from?"
At press time, the model had responded: "Nvidia."
