Amazon Celebrates Prime Big Deal Days by Offering Employees 100% Off Their Jobs

SEATTLE — Amazon marked Prime Big Deal Days this week by unveiling one of its steepest discounts yet: 100% off employment for hundreds of corporate workers.

The company confirmed a fresh round of layoffs affecting fewer than 1,000 employees, primarily in its Stores organization, thoughtfully timing the cuts alongside a major shopping event encouraging consumers to purchase air fryers, televisions and other essentials required to briefly forget they may be next.

Amazon said the restructuring would help “better align” the company with its priorities, which apparently include selling more things with fewer people while ensuring the people still buying those things continue receiving paychecks somewhere else.

“This is really about efficiency,” said one Amazon executive while standing next to a banner reading SAVE 43% ON NOISE-CANCELING HEADPHONES. “Every unnecessary employee we eliminate creates additional capacity for customers to save $11 on a robot vacuum.”

Analysts praised the move as another milestone in modern corporate capitalism, where companies improve margins by reducing payroll, then become surprised when households eventually reduce spending for mysterious macroeconomic reasons.

Amazon emphasized that Prime members still enjoy free two-day shipping on millions of products.

Former employees, meanwhile, can expect their careers to arrive separately.
