CUPERTINO, CA — Apple confirmed Tuesday that international geography is now a location-based software preference after Apple Maps began displaying Lake Ontario as “Lake America” to users in the United States.
The update follows an executive order from President Trump renaming the Great Lake, approximately 52% of which remains inconveniently located in Canada.
Under Apple’s new arrangement, Americans will see “Lake America,” Canadians will continue seeing “Lake Ontario,” and users elsewhere will see both names, allowing the same body of water to maintain several geopolitical realities simultaneously depending on the device accessing it.
Apple engineers called the feature a major advance over traditional maps, which historically suffered from the limitation of depicting places where they actually were.
“Geography has always been unnecessarily rigid,” said one Apple product manager. “Now it’s personalized.”
Google Maps has implemented a similar system, suggesting territorial disputes may eventually be resolved without treaties, wars or negotiations simply by determining which country’s IP address is requesting directions.
Canadian officials have rejected the new name, although analysts noted Canada’s objection currently appears to be functioning correctly only in the Canadian version of the app.
At press time, the White House was reportedly exploring whether Greenland could be acquired through the next iOS update.
