NEW YORK — Bitcoin moved sharply Monday, prompting analysts across Wall Street and crypto markets to immediately begin determining which of several mutually contradictory macroeconomic narratives had caused the move.
Within minutes, strategists had identified the explanation with high confidence.
Had Bitcoin risen, the move would have reflected expectations for easier Federal Reserve policy, weakening fiat currencies, institutional adoption, and renewed demand for scarce assets.
Had Bitcoin fallen, the move would instead have reflected tighter financial conditions, risk-off sentiment, profit-taking, geopolitical uncertainty, or the strengthening dollar.
Fortunately, analysts did not need to choose until after looking at the chart.
“Bitcoin is very sensitive to macro conditions,” explained one strategist. “Specifically, whichever macro condition best explains what Bitcoin already did.”
The industry has developed a reliable interpretive framework:
Price up: Investors are increasingly recognizing Bitcoin’s long-term value.
Price down: Investors are digesting near-term uncertainty.
Price flat: Investors are awaiting a catalyst.
Price violently reverses 40 minutes later: Market conditions have changed.
The approach allows analysts to maintain a nearly perfect record of explaining Bitcoin price movements, provided forecasts are issued after the movements occur.
Financial networks have also streamlined the process by preparing several headlines in advance, including “Bitcoin Rallies on Fed Optimism,” “Bitcoin Slides on Fed Concerns,” and “Bitcoin Holds Steady Ahead of Fed.”
Analysts remain divided on where Bitcoin goes next.
They expect to know shortly after it gets there.
