Bitcoin Rallies 20% After U.S. Government Demonstrates Why Someone Invented Bitcoin

Bitcoin surged roughly 20% as investors digested a familiar combination of rising federal debt, bond-market intervention, dollar weakness and renewed concern over the long-term credibility of government finances.

The rally was welcomed by Bitcoin holders, who noted that Washington had once again managed to produce an unusually effective advertisement for a monetary system Washington does not control.

The move came as Treasury expanded efforts to support the government bond market while investors continued worrying about deficits, borrowing costs and a national debt approaching $40 trillion.

Critics argued that Bitcoin remains speculative, volatile and unnecessary.

Supporters responded by pointing broadly at everything.

Market strategists said the rally reflected expectations for easier financial conditions, increased institutional adoption and renewed demand for alternatives to traditional stores of value.

Bitcoin investors offered a simpler explanation: the people managing the existing monetary system had recently been doing several of the things Bitcoin was specifically designed to make optional.

Washington officials stressed that the United States remains fully capable of managing its fiscal challenges and that intervention in the market for its own debt should not be interpreted as evidence of weakness.

Bitcoin rose another 2% on the clarification.
