Citi Lowers Bitcoin Price Target To $82,000, Plans To Raise It Once Bitcoin Reaches $82,000

NEW YORK - Citi lowered its 12-month Bitcoin price target to $82,000 Wednesday, announcing that the bank now believes the cryptocurrency will eventually recover to a price suspiciously close to the number analysts feel least embarrassed typing into a spreadsheet.

The revised target, down from $112,000, follows months of falling prices and weaker ETF flows, developments that forced strategists to reopen the bank's proprietary valuation model and move the little arrow on the chart downward.

"Our models remain fundamentally forward-looking," said one analyst who asked not to be identified because the forecast is scheduled to become historical data. "They just work best after the future has already happened."

According to people familiar with the methodology, Citi's Bitcoin model incorporates ETF flows, macroeconomic conditions, investor risk appetite and an advanced quantitative input known internally as Current Price But More Optimistic.

The bank stressed that the $82,000 target should not be interpreted as a retreat from conviction. Rather, it represents a disciplined recalibration of conviction to a level that can later be raised after Bitcoin rises and lowered after Bitcoin falls.

Wall Street welcomed the update, noting that price targets are an important service because investors who can already see the current price often require professional assistance imagining a somewhat larger one.

At press time, analysts were preparing a bullish note explaining that Bitcoin could reach $100,000 if Bitcoin first begins trading near $95,000.
