Europe Warns AI Bubble Could Threaten Financial Stability After Checking Portfolio and Realizing Europe Is Financial Stability

FRANKFURT — European officials warned that a sharp selloff in U.S. artificial-intelligence stocks could pose a serious threat to financial stability after conducting a routine review of who owns the potentially dangerous assets and discovering, with mounting concern, that it is Europe.

The warning comes as European households and institutions reportedly hold hundreds of billions of euros in shares of the Magnificent Seven, whose soaring valuations have become increasingly tied to enthusiasm over AI.

“We are closely monitoring the risk that excessive concentration in U.S. technology stocks could spill over into European markets,” said one official, before scrolling further down the spreadsheet. “Oh.”

Regulators initially sought to identify which reckless investors had allowed so much of Europe’s wealth to become exposed to a handful of extraordinarily expensive American companies.

Investigators quickly narrowed the list to pension funds, insurers, asset managers, banks, ETFs, retirement accounts, households, sovereign institutions, and essentially everyone with a globally diversified portfolio.

“This is exactly why concentration risk is dangerous,” said one economist. “Once everyone owns the same seven companies, a problem affecting those seven companies can affect everyone.”

Asked who had permitted this concentration to develop, the economist gestured broadly toward capitalism.

Officials emphasized that they are not predicting an AI crash, merely preparing for the possibility that companies valued on decades of extraordinary growth might someday experience the rare market event known as not extraordinary growth.

Europe is now studying ways to reduce systemic exposure without selling the assets whose decline would create the systemic problem.

Regulators described the situation as manageable.

They just need to protect Europe from Europe.
