Hollywood Reaffirms AI Must Never Steal Human Creativity Unless It Agrees to Pay Licensing Fees

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood studios reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to protecting human creativity from artificial intelligence this week, while clarifying that many longstanding ethical concerns can be resolved through an appropriately structured licensing agreement.

“For years, we have said that AI companies cannot simply ingest copyrighted work without permission,” said one industry representative. “They must first ingest it with permission and a negotiated royalty schedule.”

The breakthrough has helped transform a bitter cultural dispute over artistic ownership into the more familiar entertainment-industry question of who gets what percentage.

Executives emphasized that the issue has never been whether AI should be allowed to learn from human-created films, scripts, music, performances, and artwork.

The issue is whether it should be allowed to do so for free.

Under emerging licensing frameworks, artificial-intelligence companies may gain access to copyrighted material in exchange for payments, reporting obligations, and sufficient contractual language to convert “theft” into “strategic partnership.”

Creators’ rights advocates welcomed the progress while continuing to stress the importance of consent.

“Human expression is not just raw material for machines,” said one representative. “Unless the machines have negotiated a licensing fee, in which case we support innovation.”

Hollywood and AI companies said they remain committed to the principle that creativity is sacred, authorship matters, and intellectual property must be respected.

Fortunately, all three principles appear to have a price.
