London Stock Exchange Extends Trading Hours So Investors Can Make Poor Decisions At 3 A.M.Too

LONDON - The London Stock Exchange moved closer to near-round-the-clock stock trading Tuesday, eliminating one of the last remaining structural protections preventing investors from changing their entire portfolio at 3:17 a.m. after watching a YouTube video.

The shift reflects growing pressure from retail investors and always-open digital-asset markets, where participants have long enjoyed the freedom to discover life-changing financial information at any hour, including the information that they have been liquidated.

Exchange officials said longer hours will make markets more accessible to global investors and bring traditional equities into the modern era.

"Capital never sleeps," said a market-structure consultant. "Unfortunately, neither does the man who just noticed Tesla moved 0.8% in Frankfurt."

Critics warn that overnight trading can suffer from thinner liquidity and wider spreads, creating periods when a relatively small order produces an unusually large price move. Supporters countered that this is precisely what makes 2 a.m. interesting.

Brokerages are preparing new features to support the expanded schedule, including biometric warnings asking users to confirm they are awake, sober and not responding to a group chat titled "Generational Entry."

Wealth managers said the development will require a major rethink of traditional risk controls. For decades, clients could be protected by closing bells, weekends and sleep. The crypto era has demonstrated that all three are inefficient barriers between a person and an impulsive trade.

The exchange is expected to preserve a brief nightly maintenance window so investors have several minutes to regret what they did.
