Netflix Responds To Disappointing Forecast By Reducing Frequency At Which Numbers Can Disappoint Investors

LOS ANGELES - Netflix announced a major improvement to its engagement reporting Thursday, revealing that viewing-hours data will become significantly less disappointing once the company begins releasing it less often.

The streaming giant said it will cut its viewing-hours report from twice a year to once a year beginning in 2027, while emphasizing revenue and operating profit. The announcement came alongside a third-quarter forecast that fell short of Wall Street expectations and sent shares lower after hours.

Executives said the revised disclosure schedule reflects a maturing business and an industry-wide transition toward a more premium form of transparency in which investors receive all the important numbers except the ones they keep asking about.

"Subscriber counts were distracting, so we stopped reporting those quarterly," said a Netflix executive. "Viewing hours can also be distracting. Eventually we hope investors will focus on the one metric that truly matters: whether the investor still has a subscription."

Analysts said the strategy could unlock significant reporting efficiencies. If successful, Netflix may move to annual earnings, biennial revenue, and a beautifully produced investor letter every four years confirming that engagement remains healthy.

The company continues to expand into advertising, live events, games and generative AI as it searches for new avenues of growth beyond the increasingly saturated business of charging nearly everyone on Earth to watch television.

At press time, Netflix was testing a new shareholder tier that costs $4.99 extra per month to see the metrics in 4K.
