HAVANA — The U.S. Embassy in Cuba issued a health alert Friday warning travelers about unsafe food, contaminated water and failing basic infrastructure caused in part by the same economic pressure campaign the United States has spent the past nine months applying to Cuba.
The advisory urged Americans to avoid improperly refrigerated food and contaminated water, both of which have become harder to avoid as fuel shortages and power outages strain refrigeration, pumping and basic services.
Washington says its restrictions on oil shipments and additional sanctions are intended to pressure Cuba’s government and protect U.S. national security.
The resulting shortages, according to human-rights experts, have also placed additional pressure on food supplies, healthcare and civilian infrastructure, demonstrating the unusually broad targeting capabilities of modern economic policy.
The United States this week announced further sanctions as part of its effort to increase economic pressure, presumably after reviewing the deteriorating conditions and determining there remained some economy left.
The Embassy advised Americans in Cuba to continue monitoring local conditions as U.S. efforts to worsen them proceed as planned.
