Vanguard ETF Reaches $1 Trillion As Humanity Pours Historic Sum Into Having No Particular Opinion

MALVERN, Pa. - Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF became the first exchange-traded fund to surpass $1 trillion in assets this week, marking the largest concentration of capital in history organized around the investment philosophy of not wanting to think about it too much.

The fund, VOO, charges just 0.03% to own the broad U.S. large-cap market, allowing investors to outsource thousands of annual decisions to a rule that essentially says: buy the big things, keep buying the big things, and please stop refreshing CNBC.

"We have achieved one trillion dollars of active commitment to being passive," said a Vanguard executive, visibly uncomfortable that speaking to the press might constitute stock picking.

The milestone comes as index funds continue swallowing an ever-larger share of investor assets. Supporters say passive investing offers diversification and low costs. Critics warn it creates strange market dynamics when enormous pools of money buy companies not because anyone specifically likes them, but because the companies have already become enormous.

Vanguard rejected concerns that the strategy is mindless, noting that the index performs the extremely sophisticated task of periodically looking at a list.

Wall Street responded by launching 14 new funds designed to beat VOO through leverage, options, artificial intelligence and a fee 27 times larger.

VOO did not comment because it does not have an opinion.
